Supporting early childhood education and development in the townships of South Africa

Hope through education

Ithemba Ngemfundo, which translates to “hope through education” in the local language of Zulu, aims to improve early childhood education in the townships of Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. We plan to accomplish this through building pre-primary schools and educating local residents in early childhood education.  In these deeply impoverished areas, schools also provide meals to children to protect them from food insecurity which enhances their educational mission.

The Thamboville ECD Story

Thamboville ECD Centre was started by Rose Mngadi in 2017. They currently educate and care for 62 children between the ages of 0-4.5 from the local community. They are very constrained for space in their current facility, which happens to be Rose’s home. Given their value to the community, they were given a plot of land by the Ward Councillor in order to build a larger school, but money is required to complete this plan. Please read further for more information on the history of the school and the area demographics.

Continuing Community Support

Our primary aim is to help build safe educational spaces, but our mission does not end there. We plan to provide continuing educational support for the educators, financial support for food and uniforms, and maintenance of the property.

The Importance of Early Childhood Education

By giving young children early education, it sets them up for improved development, a foundation for education and learning, and set them on a path to success for the rest of their lives.

"Investing in early childhood education will lead to the greatest returns in a child's development."

— Barack Obama
